A Look at the Crocheted Cthulhu Saves the World Cthulhus
March 4th, 2011 · 2 CommentsA little over a month ago, Zeboyd Games asked me to design a Cthulhu modeled on their Cthulhu Saves the World 8-bit character. The Cthulhu was to serve as one of the rewards for contributors to their Kickstarter fund for converting the X-Box Live game to PC. Once the Kickstarter ended, I got to work making the necessary Cthulhus (and a few more for Zeboyd to use on later occasions).
It’s hard to design something from an 8-bit graphic, but I’m pleased with how it turned out. It’s got elements of several of the Cthulhus I make, but the addition of legs to the round tummy gives it a much pudgier look than its siblings, even ones with the same tummy shape. I rather like that, since Cthulhu’s body is supposed to be a bit grotesque and Lovecraft drew him looking rather corpulent. This design earned the nickname “Pudge-thulhu” and led to a lot of tummy-poking before they were mailed.
Here are some pictures I took of the new pattern before I mailed the Cthulhus off:

Note – at the time of this posting I do have several more pairs of red eyes, since I ordered backups. So people interested in placing an order for a red-eyed Cthulhu should get in touch.
