Planning WeeThulhus for Japan Project
March 17th, 2011 · 16 CommentsEdited to update that it’s now over. The last Cthulhus are being completed and an update will be posted when the donation is made. Stay tuned for September! 4-1-11
Even though the concept of Cthulhu is rather at odds with a loving, giving response to crisis, crocheted Cthulhus are no stranger to charitable causes. Last fall, I sent six crocheted Cthulhus to the Softies for Mirabel Project in Australia. I was inspired to do so by Autumn from Cthulhu Crochet and Cousins, who’s done this for several years.
Now, with crisis after crisis happening in Japan, I’ve been trying to think of ways to help. Many artists and crafters have been donating their profits to aid groups who are working on the ground in Japan. I’ve come up with what I think is the best way for Cthulhu Chick to help out (besides the donations I’ve already sent from my own funds).
So, here’s the plan:
Step 1) I crochet a bunch of Weethulhus in various colors and patterns. Of the special patterns, I’m thinking I’ll make a wee Cylon-Cthulhu model, a wee Hello model, and maybe even a wee Chef model. While I’m doing this, I’ll take requests.*
Step 2) I’ll set up a special page to offer these Weethulhus for sale at a discounted price. They’re normally $15.50 including shipping and handling, but I’ll bring it down to $13** (if I do a Chef, it’ll be $20). Then, for every Weethulhu sold as part of this, I’ll donate $10 ($16 for the Chef) to your choice of MSF or Red Cross.***
Step 3) I’ll mail out your Cthulhus and post info about how many were sold and which donations were made where.
This is a chance for both of us to give. I’ll give time and supplies, you’ll give money. We’ll both be helping the relief work in Japan and you’ll get a Weethulhu in the bargain! How does that sound?
If this goes well, it may turn into something I do periodically. Even when there isn’t a crisis on our tvs, I like to give to Médecins Sans Frontières. Perhaps it could be an annual or semi-annual event.

*Leave a comment or use the contact page to get in touch if you’d like to participate and reserve a particular type or color of Cthulhu. Colors may be limited to yarns I have in stock, but I have a lot in stock.
** Since someone asked, yes international shipping will bring the cost up a little bit. Just get in touch and I’ll run a shipping calculation for you!
***When people purchase Cthulhus, they’ll have the option to choose where the donation goes. I’ll either send it to the Red Cross’s work in Japan or to Médecins Sans Frontières. MSF doesn’t have a specific fund for its relief work in Japan, but no matter where the donation ends up, it’ll be supporting worthwhile work. I’m offering the Red Cross option, though, so you can be sure it goes to Japan. MSF is also a good option if you’re not sure that Japan needs more aid money at this point, compared to other places in crisis, and but you’d still like to participate in the Weethulhu fundraiser.

@Terry I have one I think you’d like!
@Aramis Yay!
@Julia I see no reason not to let people have more than one, the more the better!

I would LOVE to help!
As for colour, I’d leave it up to your elegant taste (something “Manly” though, like a nice green lol)

If you have such, I’d love a pirate weecthulu. Let me know how much extra that would be. Thank you (& send it to MSF)

I’ll take 2. One in the traditional green, and maybe one in white with a red spot (for the rising sun).
I can pay you in person! MSF, please.
